Expanding Our Harassment Prevention Package with Bystander Intervention Training

When we built our harassment prevention training, one of our guiding beliefs was that fostering anti-harassment cultures requires empowering everyone in an organization to respond if they experience or witness unwanted behavior.

This approach has really resonated with our early customers, all forward-thinking organizations excited to take a more modern, inclusion-focused approach to sexual harassment training. So much so, in fact, that I’m excited to announce we’re adding a new course to our harassment prevention package: bystander intervention training.

This new course — included in the package at no additional cost — builds on key concepts from the foundational employee and supervisor courses. It reinforces how harassment undermines inclusion, outlines bystanders’ unique role in fostering an anti-harassment culture, and gives people a 4-part framework for taking action. 

 

A Nuanced Approach: Power, Privilege, and Effective Bystander Interventions  

While our foundational courses cover the importance of taking action when we see unwanted behavior, our new course goes deeper into some of the nuances. 

For example, it covers how core inclusion concepts like privilege can impact bystanders: for example, people from marginalized groups are more likely to be dismissed when they call out harmful behavior. The course helps learners understand that if they have privilege (for example, based on their role, their seniority, their gender, or another aspect of their identity), they can have an outsized impact by intervening when they see harassment and making it safer for others in the organization to do the same. 

The course also offers a four-part framework for intervening, with actions that can be used individually or together, depending on the scenario and how safe the bystander feels.

The course brings all of these concepts to life with videos from Paradigm’s DEI experts, opportunities for learner reflections, case studies, and interactive knowledge checks. 

 

Course Details 

The course is available immediately as part of the Reach Harassment Prevention package. It can be taken in conjunction with the foundational courses or separately, and includes learner completion certificates and admin logs that help organizations track compliance. The Harassment Prevention package meets compliance requirements in all 50 U.S. states, and the new bystander intervention course also meets the City of Chicago’s compliance requirements.
